Is it me or does this sound like the "real" version of the song?

We've just been distracted by the disco instrumental and fast tempo.

No. We've been fooled.

This is the real version of the song.

...

Got me wondering, ... what other songs need a reinterpretation, ...

Its a nice interpretation. But its a bit slow and not for modern day people with short attention spans.

I'm sure Prince would have agree to sing this version with Billie.

Players are to MIDI what synthesizers are to waveforms.

It's an OK cover imho, but by far not as iconic as the original MJ version.

I tried to fix it... a bit.

You've got to embrace the slow version.

It's hard at first, I know.

But trust me, when you get with it you experience this song on a whole 'nother level.

'nother ... ... level!!!

Reminds me (in a good way) of Lorde’s cover of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World:. I’m always into a cover that is unrecognizable from the original, and tend to totally dismiss covers that sound like the original - but that’s just me.

I'm a really big fan of Lorde, a little bit because her first album, Pure Heroine, came out around the time my dad passed away and I listened to it every day round then. I dunno, I think it's a beautiful pop record, it has a couple of misses but it's mostly just really good. To my ears anyway. Buzzcut Season is just lovely. Her debut ep, The Love Club, is excellent too, kind of unbelievable that she was 15 when it was recorded. Fun fact, Royals, her most famous song was recorded as a demo in two days and the main vocals is totally just the first take. Another fun fact: she lives round the corner from my sister. Anyway, I'm also very fond of her cover of the Replacement's Swinging Party

Nice little bit of pop minimalism. Shame her latest record blows actual goats.

Another really neat modern cover of an 80s classic is Angel Olsen's version of the Safety Dance -

which my oldest kid got me into.

Oh, no, it's this thing Tony Robbins says a lot.

It's "another level", but Tony likes to say things are "on a whole 'nother level".

It's a horrible grammatical error and bad habit that I've been trying to break for quite a while now.

Wow, that was really awful. Their crappy keyboard player can be excused next to that horrendous "singer". Seriously, how can the band not hear how bad the singer is? I've been asking the same thing about GnR with their singer, Mickey Mouse. What a way to ruin their legacy. Time to hang it up, boys.

Hehe. Axl. Not so much snake hips boy as munchkin chubby chops.

The Billie Eiish one doesn't offend me, unlike so many other slow covers.
I blame Eva Cassidy for starting it. Take an iconic song, slow it right down, remove all the energy from it and, to really piss me off, change a few of the notes in the melody. There are a couple of current adverts that make me scowl for that reason.

I’m currently obsessed with this 80s novelty Chipmunks album that someone has slowed down to where the vocals are natural. The way it completely recontextualises these happy pop tracks into huge mournful sludge, in the best possible way.
