I can live without VST integration, but i'm finding that I really wished my rack extensions could open in Ableton. Maybe with the Ableton link integration, something like that could follow suite.

I think I figured out my situation. There had been a tutorial posted regarding programing drums strait onto the sequencer as blocks, bi-passing redrum or kong. I was experimenting with this production style and this seems to be the culprit. Other reason files in which I am using redrum or kong, and ...

not sure what is going on in your case, but i'm still on 8.3.3. with plenty of computer, mac os 10.12.2. Lately it's been a beachball fest just as you describe, and even longer 15-20 secs at times. No difference if I increase the buffer size, and no difference between using core audio vs my motu 828...
