Re: Speakers in corners (the worst case)

I use this to measure 30 degrees. the smallest angle is 30 degrees https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0f/Squadra_30_60.jpg/293px-Squadra_30_60.jpg Completely forgot about these rulers (as well as about 30⁰ rules) ~ basic math, but math lessons were a long time ago. : D Thank you!

Re: Speakers in corners (the worst case)

As long as you allow for an increased bass response due to corner placement, you'll be ok, especially if it's just for casual listening. I will probably even prefer a bit of stronger sub bass rumbling. I still wonder about the speakers' sub out crossover. It seems to center/narrow the stereo image ...

Re: Speakers in corners (the worst case)

First, most speakers suggest a 30° angle for speakers for an equilateral triangle of 60° each half. Also, many speakers have built in boundary adjustments. And don't forget that many times you have no choice but to put speakers against a wall, and it's not a bad thing unless they are rear ported (t...

Speakers in corners (the worst case)

So yeah, the hazard of "bedroom" project studio: I'm cornered like a dog with this. : D Or more like the speakers will be, but they certainly might bite back - acoustically speaking. No other solution, I must build a simple speaker-holding shelf, and put the speakers in the corners. Even so I won't ...

Re: Arturia Announcement Today April 9 6pm CEST/12 noon EST

Ah, the fairly new, Japanese company (I thought that all this time) - now I see it's French, and founded in 1999. I live under a rock I guess. x D Their MIDI controllers seem interesting - finally a company that uses encoders. "Encoder" is such a generic term, what do you mean exactly? Which compan...

Re: 5 pin VS USB MIDI - Any difference?

I think there was an update to the device, and the newer edition, according to the manual, can handle DIN MIDI properly. Hold the presses, the MIDI input is actually on the front panel - odd choice (and why I missed it) especially since there appears to be plenty of room on the back panel for it. A...

Re: Would a mono cable splitter halve the volume?

I know... so many questions... But yeah, since I wanted an authentic dual mono recording, I guess the best way would be to record from a hardware synth's mono out, into stereo. That's why I thought about, if I get a Behringer Neutron, then I'd connect a jack to its mono-out with a "Y" all-mono jack...

Re: 5 pin VS USB MIDI - Any difference?

NOTE: IF you go with Neutron, there is only the USB option for MIDI IN if I’m not mistaken, so a moot point. Otherwise… If you’re going from a controller keyboard directly to a sound module, MIDI will be your only option in most/all cases (not 100% sure). But if you’re going to the computer and bac...

Re: Would a mono cable splitter halve the volume?

When I have the perfect midi sequence idea I would record the analog mono synth twice, and pan hard L and R. I may or may not change some settings. That solution has its pros and cons, though I would record it once, then run it through the synth two more times and record that for left and right, in...

Re: 5 pin VS USB MIDI - Any difference?

+1 on the above. I only use DIN MIDI now after spending more time unsuccessfully trying to isolate and eliminate digital noise, than actually make music. It's a shame because the integration in USB MIDI is so much more powerful, but frankly not worth the hassle. From a latency perspective I am *gue...

There's a reason that 5-pin DIN MIDI is still a thing after 40 years. It works.
Since it's also digital, is there any latency, or is it under 1 ms?

Say, I get an Arturia MIDI keyboard with DIN out, and I connect that to a Behringer Neutron's MIDI (DIN) in.

Re: 5 pin VS USB MIDI - Any difference?

MIDI DIN ports are optically isolated by design. You won’t get ground loop noise over MIDI DIN. USB is a general electronics connection protocol. It wasn’t designed with music production and audio engineering in mind. MIDI (and audio) over USB works well… but there is always the possibility of digi...

Re: 5 pin VS USB MIDI - Any difference?

One thing I've found using USB out of the PC into hardware is that the signal is very noisy - it differs for each synth but in a couple it makes it almost unusable. No doubt this is because my set up is shit! But it's the only way I can have it in my recording situation (which is in my bedroom whic...

5 pin VS USB MIDI - Any difference?

Is it worth buying a midi keyboard with dedicated 5 pin MIDI out for playing an analog synthesizer? Would it have better reaction time? Or is the latency barely any different when a plain USB midi keyboard goes into PC, then through USB out, goes into the analog synthesizer's USB in? (I'm still plan...

Re: True(ish) analog (dual) mono?

Why record the same thing twice? Are you wanting to capture the different sound of the left vs the right input channel? For something to be "center" you need EXACTLY the same thing is each side. This is called the "phantom center" for a reason, and an interesting subject on its own (and the whole i...

Re: True(ish) analog (dual) mono?

Why record the same thing twice? To see if it creates a subtle difference between the left and right channel. If I initially don't hear a difference, then I'd take a look at Mid/Side, and raise the Side's volume a bit. As far as I know, it should have noise, a bit of distortion, maybe some hum, all...

True(ish) analog (dual) mono?

Some of you know that I plan to get into the analog world (I'm 99.1% decided on getting a Behringer Neutron). But then, something struck me: If I want it to be as analog (speaking about the flavor) as possible, then duplicating a single channel mono recording in Reason, so that it's dual mono (the s...

Re: Is Behringer Neutron the closest to Subtractor?

I've had a Neutron for a year or so. It's... alright. I mean, no, it's actually pretty good. The layout is very well designed, very efficient, and the patchbay is excellent for its size. It sounds good and you can get a surprising variety of sounds from out of it, especially when you start patching...

Re: Is Behringer Neutron the closest to Subtractor?

You could hear the tones and character of the synth there at its dirtiest, so if you dig , you won’t be disappointed. I think for the price it is a great synth, and in better hands than mine it is probably very useful! It definitely sounds suitable for basses with character, too. But I would also e...

Re: Is Behringer Neutron the closest to Subtractor?

Luckily, I like challenges, so I'm cool with adapting to the instrument's character. What kind of processing did you use on drums? Analog delay though? Tops if I can create a comb filter with it, then I'd use it. But yeah, features are more important for me than sound this time, where synthesizing ...

Re: Is Behringer Neutron the closest to Subtractor?

Any of those synths are easy to program like the Subtractor. The oscillators in the Neutron are based on the Curtis CEM3340. Those were used in synths Prophet 5 Rev 3 and the SH101. The Neutron is quite flexible if you don't mind the workflow. I have many Behringer pieces in my collection and they ...

Re: Is Behringer Neutron the closest to Subtractor?

I've only ever used the input to process drums. Depending on the music style and Sonic aesthetic you're after, it may or may not work for you. I personally mainly only ever use it for bass, bypassing entirely the drive and the delay. I find the character of the neutron would be more suited for dirt...

Is Behringer Neutron the closest to Subtractor?

Behringer has these neat little, compact semi-modular analog synthesizers, which have a really good price, too. I mainly considered Neutron, because it seems closest to Reason's Subtractor. Polyphony isn't an issue, since I could always just record things separately. I'd at least make use of my Focu...
