Digital Audio and the DSP meter
What is the relationship between CPU load, buffer size and the DSP meter in digital audio? Quite a technical subject: a lot of preconceived notions float around, and we keep seeing in the forum, those questions of, “Why do I have stutters/clicks when my CPU is only at 40%?”
To answer these questions, audio engineer Normen Hansen (author of the VMG-01 Rack Extension) decided to tackle the problem in simple terms via this short but comprehensive video. In ten minutes, you’ll understand how audio is generated, where the bottlenecks are, how a signal is converted back and forth between the digital and the analog domain, and, most of all, why DSP use doesn’t always equate CPU power.
