(80s vibe melodic synthpop)Future in the past

Postby jappe » 18 Jun 2016

Hey all,

this is my second tune using (*almost) only Bitleys patches (Way Beyond Fairlight 2 and other).
*EDIT: The robot voice is the ST-1speak& tweak RE.
Mastered by emastered.com

Vocals process:
Loop recording in Reason, cleanup in Adobe Audition v3, fixing pitch flaws/vibrato adjustment in Melodyne 4, choir by using three different vocal takes panned mid, left(at 9) and right(at3)

I can relate so much to this feeling, back then it was living in the future through music. Today we do it when we're surfing in bed with our tablets. :) The cool thing about the 80s was that the sound changed so much from year to year because of the music technology development. Depeche mode's back catalogue is a cool example of that journey. :)

Great grabby intro and cool sounds.

Vocally a bit like Marian Gold of Alphaville which is also very cool.

Overall song pacing my be a bit off but still very cool and needs to go on that album I am waiting for.

Thank's for sharing your impressions!
I actually browsed through the first Depeche albums yesterday to get a reference tune for mastering (ended up using the emastered.com mastering service though...lazy me:-)
And there's development for sure from record to record!

Thanks!

Having an Alphaville reference in a review is great, that's how I want it to sound!
Still at the very rookie level with the singing, but on a long journey to improve it. This voice mentors tutorials are in my toolbox:

And also r/Singing

About the song pacing comment, I assume that's because of the sporadic pieces of vocals rather than more ambitious lyrics?

Since I got "Way Beyond Fairlight" I think I would be able to do more consistent songs to fit in an album, thanks for the encourage

I think for this sort of track you nailed the vocals.

Nice and catchy..

I really like this song, and the vocals do also remind me of Marian Gold and the keyboard sounds are fantastic. Also like the use of a sonogram as the song picture... nice touch!

Maybe you can list some of the patches/combinators you used? I have Way Beyond Fairlight as well (probably my fave refill) but it is so big I have yet to really do more than scratch the surface, you know?

2016 marks 25 years since I recorded my first song (sequenced on a Commodore Amiga 500 with an SR-16 drum machine, Korg M1, and electric guitar). Amazing how far music creation technology has come.

I think I always had the 80's ringing in my head, even when trying to make more modern stuff.

Sure, these are the Bitley patches:

The Prophet:
Automatic Padomat

Orlando JX-10
Vassleadfin
Analogvetu3
Spiklead2

Way Beyond Fairlight
Better Than The Real Thing
Linndrum 1
Aggro Bass
Rez Lead

PolyX3M
SX250 Choir
Danke Choir

Fairlight CMI Supremacy
707 Kit 1

Fairlight CMI Supremacy
1982 Bass

When checking I noticed I also had one factory drum kit (Disco Kit RDK) for the main bass drum that I wasn't aware of (I searched for sounds with Bitley as root folder but must have failed on that).

I hope people will find the Bitley patches giving them as much inspiration as I get.
I love to use RE:s as well, but when I'm in music making mode then sometimes I just want to have something to inspire me without creating sounds from bottom up. Saving that time allows me to stay in the short creativity window.

Funny that, I posted a track the other day made in Reason 9 with heavy use the players (The Players Took Me There) and I had a couple of comments of the 80's feel and that was not even in my mind, but the 80's was massive to me being a teenager at the time, the vibe is in our blood LOL
