the compelling thing about the major social media players (Threads/Facebook/Instagram/Twitter) is their reach. Mastodon seems okay once you get it figured out, but it’s likely only ever going to fill a niche role, with a comparatively very limited user base. fine for some, but if you want to connect with your technologically-impaired aunt, or reach a broader audience with your music, something like Mastodon is much less appealing.

Meh. Lonny was already running Twitter into the ground by himself.DJMaytag wrote: ↑11 Jul 2023Ruining a $44B purchase by Musk is compelling enough to me.integerpoet wrote: ↑10 Jul 2023Threads would need to offer me something compelling of its own that overcomes its guilt-by-association-with-Zuck.

Indeed. If I were serious about reaching a large audience, I would definitely spend time on all the social media, however toxic, with an artist identity which doesn't significantly connect to my real-world identity. My wife's chamber chorus uses the Meta networks to promote itself quite effectively; attendance has significantly increased since that started. I just know from experience that I can't enjoy the billionaire-owned networks for personal use, and from that perspective they are identical. My hope is that if and when Threads rolls out support for ActivityPub and starts interop with networks like Mastodon that Mastodon doesn't become toxic. But this is a bit like worrying that an influx of AOL users might ruin Usenet, I bet. My job requires me to be active on social media, which sucks but there's nothing I can do about it. I've just opened a Threads account, it'll be interesting to see how it goes. My Twitter feed has become a shitshow - a while ago I stopped seeing the content of people I follow, and assumed that they'd jumped ship. But I went looking for them and they're still there, it's just that I don't see their tweets. Also, my tweets get about 10% of the engagement they were getting a few months back. I assume it's because I haven't paid Elon $8 for a blue checkmark, have heard that the algorithm buries non-verified accounts
Anyway, I'm heading over to Threads - was going to delete my Twitter account but I think I'll keep checking in every now & then, just to enjoy the spectacle of Lord Hair Plugs crashing his $44 billion investment

No worries. If you're kicking a billionaire, even when he's down, it's still punching up.

Anyone still replying to this thread, or is it dead too?

Get off my grass!
I'm still checking it daily. I know it's growing slowly and adding features... slowly.
Yeah, I was kind of hoping that there would be steady additions of features, but it’s stalled at the moment. Hoping some of the big missing pieces are filled in soon. I’ve missed the daily checkin with people I like and admire.

the most recent update added a follower feed in chronological order. still needs a topic search/trending topics, but that’s the biggest thing still missing for me.
Yep, just got it. With Elon blowing up the Twitter brand it, I wonder if his “business” will make it beyond 2023? I think Meta employees have been desperate for something more relevant than the VR experiment and are probably very motivated to black Elon’s eye.

Over half the people who signed up for Threads have stopped using it already, prompting Mark Zuckerberg to push for 'hooks' to entice users, report says
Threads took just five days to reach 100 million users when it launched earlier this month.
But Mark Zuckerberg told staff that more than half of them haven't kept using the app, per Reuters.
Although Meta is working on new features to help "hook" users and keep them coming back.
