Re: High Pass Filters DON'T f...ing ruin your mixes

Agree with the first part of that But when it comes to "use your ears", isn't the issue that a track might have some low-end content that you *can't* hear when you solo the track? But then if you end up with 20 tracks with the same sort of redundant low-end content, it starts to sound muddy in the ...

Who moved the topic to The Kitchen? It is a discussion, with teaching and learning. If you wish, we could have altered the title, cleaned up the comments, etc. Otherwise, you abuse your position, without discussing how you act, or at least notifying me about it. "The problem? Many people see the clickbait. They don't watch the video, but still "learn" from the clickbait, and will think as if HPF-ing a mix would be bad. Why didn't I add context? Cause when I did, people had sympathy for the devil. And I don't like advertising clickbait crap." And behold! Ev...

I highpass everything at 2KHz just to be on the safe side. And I sidechain everything too. You better low-pass at 2KHz at the same time, just to be on the safe side :puf_bigsmile: See, I knew there will be sympathy for the devil. if it's not for bass, I cut off anything below 160 hz really hard, and I'm starting to get confused about this , do or doesnt it introduce artifacts to be more precise, I know the clickbait video and I even know why that was made, as there was an video earlier about this problem that he tries to de...

Thus, it rather sounds like that an HPF will magically damage the sound in all cases.
The video actually makes the counter argument to that.
The clickbait itself just says essentially, HPF is crap.

Re: High Pass Filters DON'T f...ing ruin your mixes

That´s not necessarily true because when using HPF on individual channels, these are usually set to specifically suit a channel. If we are talking cleaning up a mix, HPF is quite essential and you wouldn´t really hear any low end shizzle that´s creating energy/level anyway. Putting a high-pass filt...

Re: High Pass Filters DON'T f...ing ruin your mixes

I think I gave a pretty straight forward example regarding a full mix, not mix channels. Putting a high-pass filter on a whole mix is the same as putting one on each mix channel. You are high-passing everything. As I said, I would never do that. If there is a DC-signal anywhere in your circuits, yo...

For full context. You decide. If you click and play. Nothing evil in the end imho. "The problem? Many people see the clickbait. Re: High Pass Filters DON'T f...ing ruin your mixes

High-passing stuff can be useful and not a problem. Not high-passing stuff can equally be useful and not a problem. Using high-pass filters doesn't have to ruin your mix, but it definitely can ruin your mix if used the wrong way. It can surely take the life out of your mix. Saying that high-pass fi...

OK thanks for sharing. Context: A youtube clickbait video popped up, subtly suggesting the opposite of what I "reacted" here to it. Granted, I didn't click, and I bet it also talks about what I do here, hence clickbait. The problem? Many people see the clickbait. They don't watch the video, but sti...

High Pass Filters DON'T f...ing ruin your mixes

High Pass Filters on mixes are used for removing low frequency rumble - if needed.

A 24 dB/Octave HPF at 20 Hz, or a 12 at 30 Hz, IIR/analog-style/zero-latency type, is more than enough, and won't cause any audible ringing. You won't ever hear any "phase issues".

Re: How to choose a good Sound Card

Scarlett Solo Gen 3 is great for recording, but I wasn't impressed by the HP out. A bit noisy and inaccurate.

E30 II + L30 II are premium quality, and compatible with everything.

I (re)searched for years until I found these, thank god (or rather ASR : ) ).

Re: What SPL (decibel) meter to buy?

When I once tried, REW got stuck on telling me to set my speakers to exactly 60 or 80 dB, while it played a pink noise sample. I remember you recommended the Behringer one, and reviews are pretty good. How does it know when the volume level is at 80 dB for example? I want to be careful not to liste...

Re: Subtractor for iOS (iPad)

Subtractor to this day is a pretty genius and one of a kind synthesizer. Of course, there are newer types of synthesis appearing, but honestly, they aren't much of invention, rather refinement. They look different and fancy, but the capabilities don't sound that much revolutional. Start sampling wha...

Re: What did you just buy yourself?

I gave in to Edifier R2850DB speakers. I was dying to get a 3-way speaker pair, which is convenient (bluetooth, RCA inputs, coax, optical), looked cool (yep : ) ), has enough power, is big enough (yes, AAAAH!), and has decent sound. Oh hey, came with a remote control, too, sub out, and bass, treble,...

Re: What SPL (decibel) meter to buy?

Hi! Thanks for the info! It depends, since I will be getting a measuring microphone, and REW requires an accurate SPL. Not sure how reliable my phone is. I read, too, that many phones are fairly accurate, but then some say, a dedicated device would do better. I would use it when placing speakers, a...

Re: What SPL (decibel) meter to buy?

As far as accuracy goes I don't think you'll find a better app than NIOSH SLM as it is the only app (as far as I know) that shows any compliance with SPL metering standards (especially relevant to workplace safety and live sound applications). However, if you want fairly accurate readings then even...

Re: Which External Sound Card?

I have the Audio Technica ATH-E70 in-ear monitors, and they sound literally perfect with Topping's E30 II DAC and L30 II Headphone Amplifier.

Or, not premium quality like the above, but it goes, I have a Focusrite Scarlett Solo, too. It rather shines for microphone recording.
