I would recommend using the built in stuff enough to figure out if its enough for you before dip into the RE and/or VST pools. While using the built in stuff you'll begin to see what is or isn't there for your own workflow...then you can try to fill in any perceived gaps in your own workflow with pl...

I'm looking to finish out the Blamsoft collection...hoping to see the VK2, Resampler and the Distortion trifecta. Those are the only BlamREs not in my rack....I'm also planning on getting the Distiller sale it not...that thing is amazing.

By allowing VST plugins, they essentially allow to bypass this entire path. Not necessarily. Steve Duda already hinted at why. One or two people took that to mean he was doing an RE version of Serum when he quite specifically said no such thing. Obviously if I mention it here I'd get a written warn...

At that point you might as well just use lmms or emi/loopbacking if you're dead set on not using daws with rewire support. You could also sugest that to the companies too, they take input I believe. Blamsoft will always get my support...their RE's are awesome. If I have the option of an RE and a VST that are directly comparable, I'll take the RE. Its going to have far better Rack Integration which is why I love Reason. So, Serum vs Expanse (I own both)...I would rather use Expanse, even though ...

The RE format is going to be fine. The types of REs that do well will probably evolve and adapt, however. For instance, I'll use Expanse and it's Rack integration over Serum but loading up FabFilter Pro-Q2 VST over GQ-7 is a no-brainer for me.

From the looks of the design of the Plugin Rack Unit...it looks like a mutated Combinator without the knobs and buttons. Maybe that signals a new and beefier Combinator in R10...
